Healthy outcomes are good for the economy...

Positive outcomes can assist in providing a sustainable future for the NHS as a Prevention Service with its main objective of keeping people out of hospital.

The Government should be responsible...

for introducing policies to counteract the alarming levels of rising obesity among all age groups.

Tax breaks for health interventions...

by employers to assist sick employees returning to work should be extended to cover preventative interventions for all.

The Government to assist...

in enabling healthy foods and making them more accessiblity rewarding retailers lower prices. This means that poor families in deprived areas are incentivised to adopt a healthy eating culture.

The time has come where the taxpayer’s contribution...

to the NHS should be identifiable. The more people understand the cost of their healthcare, the more responsibility they’ll take.

An additional tax component...

should be imposed on unhealthy foods and drinks at the same time a positive tax incentive offered to employers who provide healthy outcomes for their employees.

Sustainability of the NHS

The only way the insatiably increasing demand for healthcare in the UK can be stemmed is by awakening a national interest in a “Wellness Culture” at home, school and the workplace to prevent “people” from becoming “patients”. Therefore, for the NHS to remain sustainable and survive, it needs to adopt the culture of a Prevention Service with its principle objective of keeping people out of hospital.

Healthcare Research recommendations

In view of the now accepted fact that the National Health Service will require an extra £30B by 2020 if it is to survive as a “free at the point of use” service, it is clear that further savings can only be delivered through more rigorous prevention policies and improved public health. Some of the Healthcare Research UK recommendations are outlined below.

The ideas considered in this publication are all based on suggestions by us and others which enhance “Prevention” & “Wellness” as needed cultures in employment, education and home environments.

1.

The Government should be responsible for introducing policies to counteract the alarming levels of rising obesity among all age groups.

2.

Tax breaks for health interventions by employers to assist sick employees returning to work should be extended to cover preventative interventions for all.

3.

The Government to assist in enabling healthy foods and making them more accessible by rewarding retailers with lower prices. This means that poor families in deprived areas are incentivised to adopt a healthy eating culture.

4.

The time has come where the taxpayer’s contribution to the NHS should be identifiable. The more people understand the cost of their healthcare, the more responsibility they’ll take.

5.

An additional tax component should be imposed on unhealthy foods and drinks at the same time a positive tax incentive offered to employers who provide healthy outcomes for their employees.

Healthy outcomes are good for the economy

Edition 2 - November 2015

This publication sets out the progress of the NHS since 2010. It is intended as lobbying material for Government and civil servants engaged in Health Policy in the UK.

It is non-political and seeks to draw policy maker’s attention to an urgent need for the Government of the day to give a lead in promoting a “Wellness” culture in UK society to prevent people from becoming patients and thus alleviate the enormous demand on both GPs in Primary Care and the Acute Hospital Trusts in Secondary care.
